An Esthetician’s Posh Journey

Five years ago when I opened my skin care practice, I had an account with an internationally respected skin care brand. It was a good product line, with a variety of cleansers, exfoliants, masks and moisturizers for all skin types. It was effective and I got results when I used these products during spa treatments.

However, a couple of years into my business ownership adventure I started to get bored with the products I was using. They still worked really well, but the packaging and scents were clinical (AKA a snoozefest), they could be purchased at many locations around town, and the price point was just high enough that it was a deterrent to people wanting to take a chance on an impulse buy. I needed to find a new addition to my product toolbox.

Along came Perfectly Posh. A esthetician friend of mine had started selling it, and I was drawn in by the fun packaging, clever names and moderate price point. This was a line that spoke to me, and because Posh also makes a wide array of body treatment products, all of the voids in my practice could be filled by opening just this one account.

And so I did! Two-and-a-half years later, I still find Perfectly Posh’s line to be effective, budget-friendly, and so much fun to use and sell in my skin care practice. My clients love the products and are thrilled to be able to use them at home too. Thank you, Posh!

Self Care

I was invited to give a ten minute talk about self care at a fabulous women’s event tomorrow. I have a lot to say about the subject, so distilling things down to ten minutes for a room full of women I don’t know entirely well presented this challenge: What would they like to hear? What would apply to their lives, of which I know very little?

In good conscience I cannot say “get a monthly pedicure”. When life is hectic, for most people, pedicures and salon appointments fall to the bottom of the list. Telling someone who just lost their job, or who’s taking care of an ill family member, or who hates having their feet touched to “get a monthly pedicure” is unrealistic at best. The same goes for manicures, facials and massages; they are all really awesome, healthy, stress-reducing activities for most people most of the time, but when self care is most crucial, when life has beaten our spirits down with the tenacity of a prize fighter in the 10th round, we may need to be more pragmatic.

I’ve been thinking about this for weeks, and have come up with what I believe to be my best self care definition to date: Self care is making space in which you realize the sacred nature of wellbeing.

This could mean taking yourself out for lunch, going to the movies with a friend, roadtripping it to the ghosttowns of central Nevada, booking a cruise, turning off your phone and reading the book that’s been sitting unopened on your coffee table for eighteen months, painting your face with everything in your makeup drawer and raiding the Target clearance racks for an afternoon, playing your favorite game, all the glitter and YES, even that pedicure.

And when this is too much, make space. That is enough.

Basic Facial Steps for a DIY Facial

Of course I reference Perfectly Posh products in this video, but you could use pretty much any complete skin care line for similar results.

Watching the video above is the sexiest way to learn about these steps, but the express version consists of this:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Exfoliate
  3. Tone (if you want to, or after cleansing if you want to, or really anywhere that makes sense for you)
  4. Massage
  5. Extractions (only if you’re trained to do them safely!)
  6. Mask
  7. Treat
  8. Moisturize/SPF

Perfectly Posh Resolutions, 2018

I’ve been a Posh consultant for two years and four months now, and I’ve been a Silver Premier for one year and three months of that time. 2017 was a year of building, rebuilding, troubleshooting, and breaking through a plateau that had vexed me for most of the year. 2017’s lesson? Leadership is not for the faint of heart.

With 2018 now in its infancy, the promise of new opportunities both inside and outside of myself have motivated me to make some Perfectly Posh resolutions:

  1. Read more, learn more. I’ve been devouring books and audiobooks on network marketing and leadership. Some of my top picks are Rock Your Network Marketing Business by Sarah Robbins (she’s a top earner with Rodan + Fields skin care), Rejection Proof by Jia Jiang (this book beats the fear out of you while making you laugh), and Entreleadership by Dave Ramsey (sound leadership advice from your judgey uncle). There are also lots of useful videos on YouTube from these authors.
  2. Focus on what I enjoy. I’m a cash & carry sales at my skin care office kind of girl. I like my displays, I like my ambiance, I like having private conversations with my clients and customers about Posh products that might make life a little better for them. I’m self-employed because I need to make the decisions and I don’t want anyone in my way! In 2017 I tried to do the large vendor show thing. I met some cool people, but goddess have mercy, it was not my bag. Maybe I’ll get into it more in a future post, but small events, online orders and one-on-one sales are the ways and means that speak to me.
  3. Curate my collection, tighten up my brand. We don’t have to carry every. single. product. We don’t even have to like every single product! Taking up valuable shelf or storage space with merch you’re not passionate about is inefficient at best. At my office I’m primarily a foot care and skin care technician; I don’t have to replicate the entire Whole Foods personal care department in my tiny office. Too much product can be overwhelming, distracting, and can look cluttered and unprofessional.
  4. Invest my time in duplicability. Making instructional videos and uploading them to YouTube so they’re there to revisit as needed. Uploading files to our team Facebook group so we can find them again with minimal effort. Writing blog posts like this one! Time is our most valuable resource, and I’m learning how to work with that fact.

I’m excited about the new products Perfectly Posh is coming out with this year (gimme that new Defiant skin care line!) and I couldn’t be prouder of my team. 2018 is our year to grow, evolve, and love on ourselves like never before.

Queen Routine

Today I want to talk about something very near and dear to my heart: Sleep.

Getting out of bed is hard, guys. It really is. Especially when you’ve been stretched to the ends of the earth for days or weeks on end, and your body is just, almost literally, dying for some relief. Some relaxation. A break. Exhibit A: Me last week.

Well, let me tell you something. This morning I awoke blissfully undisturbed by the muffled alarms beneath my pillow. I silenced each and every one (because I need help), stretched my arms wide and tall, and literally floated out of bed. Well, pretty literally. I felt rested, relaxed and just… at ease.

So, how is this possible? BECAUSE – I made time for myself to relax, unwind, and do NOTHING except care for myself last night before I went to sleep. Thus, I have emerged from my worn-out state as queen-ruler of my universe. I feel so good that I wanted to share my luxurious home self-treatment with you guys.

Without further adieu, here she is:

Time: 30-60 min

  1. Cue the music: I threw on “Evening Acoustic” on Spotify and let the voices of Iron & Wine and Joseph serenade me while I warmed up the shower.
  2. Rub a dub, baby: I took my time washing my hair, making sure to massage every bit of my scalp – sooo good, you guys. So good.
  3. Hop out, fill the tub up: While I filled the tub with hot water, my vibrant red Overtone conditioner sat & worked its magic on my hair (if you have colored hair, you NEED Overtone in your life – just sayin’. It has this wonderful peppermint smell that stimulates your scalp while depositing hues that extend the life of your hair color!).
  4. Add a cup or two of epsom salt: PP has some awesome epsom salt formulas (Muscle Through and Sleepy Sleep are my favorites!) I used Muscle Through this time because I feelin’ the rosemary – Sleepy Sleep is infused with lavender, which is just lovely and calming. I became one with my bath for about 20 minutes – but really, that’s just an estimate because I felt timeless in that tub.
  5. Wash up: After soaking, I washed up with my Milkin’ It chunk, and exfoliated my fresh and clean skin with my favorite Snarky, Fauxpology. I just adore its smell – So much so that I got the perfume crayon in its scent!!!
  6. Face time: My face needed a little loving, so I exfoliated with BFF, patted dry, and followed up with my go-to mask, Cackle Spackle. I love using these two together – my face felt SO smooth, and the little red patches around my nose really calmed down. I washed up, then moisturized with Never Grow Up, which is a toning and brightening anti-aging cream. I am a huge fan of Moisture 911, but I’m out of it at the moment (sad face).
  7. Finishing touches: I lathered up neck-to-toe with Hard Daze Night, which is a yummy, fragrant, hemp-scented body butter. If you’re looking for a softer-smelling body butter, I would highly recommend Fresh, Creamy Milk. I like HDN a lot, but FCM is hands-down the best body butter Perfectly Posh has. It has a little more of a, for lack of better word, warm and creamy scent. The bamboo extract just gives it a little oomph of decadence. I love it.
  8. Get comfy: This is the best part. Grab your oversized pajamas and get COMFY! Your restful, well-deserved night of sleep awaits. Your favorite body butter will soak into your skin throughout the night, so you’ll wake up with soft, supple skin all over.

And there you have it! Like magic, you’ll awaken rejuvenated with a brand new mission.

This little routine is for all you queens, kings and mystical beauties reading. I really went in, so feel free to modify time or steps to your liking!

It really feels like an at-home spa treatment, guys. If I had planned it a little better, I would have added a pedicure… next time 😉

Gotta have your Posh? Grab it here!
